HBYC & YV: Developing Future Female Leadership

HBYC & YV: Developing Future Female Leadership

By Marija Groen

At the Women and Girls in Sailing Club Representatives welcome aboard night, there was a real buzz in the air at The Boatshed Albert Park on Tuesday December 11, as the newly elected Women & Girls in Sailing (WGIS) Club Representatives met with and were welcomed by YV staff, board members and WGIS committee members. As the nominated representative from HBYC, I had the pleasure of attending this welcoming function, with Maureen Dickins (WOW Committee) and Georgie Mitchell (Rear Commodore). Much was learnt about women and girls in sailing across Victoria, and the ongoing commitment of Yachting Victoria, to ensure equity in participation and enjoyment for women and girls in sailing, (WGIS). YV is trying to get both Sailors and Non-sailors involved, in all types of participation, inc. Racing, Cruising, Administration (club, racing, events, committees etc) and leadership.

I urge you all to have a look at the WGIS website which was launched this year. There is still much to be achieved which will prove to strengthen and value add to all sailing clubs. YV strategic plan directly includes the increase of participation across the state of women and girls in all aspects of sailing and club involvement. YV has developed some great policies and procedures for clubs to consider to enhance the participation of women and girls in sailing. I look forward to working with the members, the club and the general committee on these initiatives.

In the mean time there are opportunities galore for women and girls to get out on the water, into the clubs, committees, race organising etc... One such initiative is a leadership course which WGIS is sponsoring in April/May 2014. (Anyone interested can find out more info on the WGIS website or contact me via WOW@hbyc.org.au)

For the racers amoungst you... don’t forget the Port Phillip Women’s Racing Series for 2014. Given the HBYCs training and boat (Satie), availability I am sure we can look forward to a new year of great teamwork, fun and even some results!

Merry Christmas and a great 2014 to you all,

Marija Groen
